SAMPLE BODY PARAGRAPH

Notice that this paragraph has a topic sentence (introduction), details (body) and a closing statement (conclusion). Also, notice that I quote the commercial when necessary.

There is an endless stream of television commercials that encourage and promote overconsumption, each in their own way. In MLBs Prove it! ad, created specifically for the 2017 playoffs, viewers are told that youre not a real fan without official MLB apparel. We see children and their families sporting their merchandise in a variety of settings: the bedroom, the living room, the kitchen, the front yard. With the tag line Prove it! the characters compete not in a game of baseball (only one is actually playing baseball and really shes just playing catch in her front yard), or even who knows more about baseball, but in who has more MLB merchandise. The experience of baseball is no longer in playing the game but in representing the game. One character even proudly says that (by wearing MLB gear) shes doing her part. Furthermore, mirroring the current health of the American public, three of the characters are overweight, suggesting that being physically able to play the game is not a requirement for fandom; simply wearing MLB gear is an adequate substitute. The most ridiculous and overt promotion of overconsumption is the idea that a real fan follows not only their home team but many teams–any and all to achieve ultimate fandom. MLB has turned team loyalty to brand loyalty with MLB being the brand. The saddest aspect of this shameless call for overconsumption is its direct marketing to children, concluding with a childs voice encouraging us to Find all the gear you need all post season long at mlbshop.com. Why wait to get customers when they are adults when you can get them hooked right from childhood?

SAMPLE INTRODUCTION PARAGRAPH

Notice that this paragraph has background information and the argument/thesis statement.

Compared to most of the rest of the world, American high schools are unique in that the school is not just a place of academic study. While in other countries extracurricular activities are conducted outside of school, in American schools such activities are woven into the school and the school day. In fact, even things like music, art and theater are not part of an academic high school. Students interested in such things are expected to either attend specialized high schools dedicated to the arts, or they are to take lessons after school in private on their own. School is simply for academics. Of all the activities typically not seen in academic-only high schools, nothing stands out more than athletics–American education has woven sports into the school day. In fact, schools even have mascots to represent the athletic teams and to create a sense of school identity. A major event in the life of an American high school, then, is the pep assembly (also known as a pep rally). A pep assembly is where the entire school body gathers in the gymnasium or playing field to rally the school community around a particular sport or the entire sports program. While pep rallies have been an integral part of the American school experience for decades now, they are not necessarily a positive experience for students and should be questioned. In fact, pep assemblies can be detrimental to the high school experience.
