What is the Research Paper assignment?
The purpose of the Research Paper is to allow you to synthesise your knowledge of Greek myth and a contemporary cultural illustration, thus illuminating the strong connection between Classical myth and 21st century society. In short, you are to compare an ancient myth to an example of that myth found in modern-day society.
How do I complete the Research Paper?
Consider the myths weve studied in this course. Choose a myth that has a particular meaning for you. This will be the topic of your paper.
Use the course materials and do some further research on your myth. Try to draw at least one important parallel between your ancient Greek myth and its more modern incarnation(s).
Define the thesis for your paper and conduct further research as necessary. In total you will have to use a minimum of 1 ancient source and three scholarly academic resources to support your thesis. For the purposes of this assignment, academic resources include online journal articles as well as resources you can check out of the library. This step is critical to your success. It is very important to understand what constitutes an ancient source (see appendix to Chapter 1 Sources for Classical Mythology – for further details).
Note: You may also make use of more popular sources of information; however, these sources do not help you meet the minimum number of required academic sources you must consult and use. Any and all sources used in your paper must be properly cited using the MLA format. Other requirements include:
Arial or Times New Roman font
1200 words (excluding bibliography)
Include a word count for you paper underneath your paper’s title
Begin to write your first draft. Be sure to leave yourself enough time so that when you are done your first draft you can go back and revise your work. In addition to producing a well-researched paper, it is expected you also submit a well-edited and logical piece of writing.
How do I submit my work?
When you are satisfied with your work, please submit your paper in the Major Paper dropbox.
How will my work be assessed?
Your work will be assessed both on the merits of the research and the presentation of that research. The conclusions you draw about the connection you have made and the means by which you support your analysis will help determine the grade you receive. Papers must be well written and formatted to meet the rigorous and high standards of the University of Guelph-Humber. The comparison you make may take any of a number of forms, and it may be direct, or only allusive. It may include, but is not limited to a comparison from the world of advertising, literature, commercial branding, team names or logos. But, most importantly, the first step of the assignment is for you to make this connection. So, insomuch as you believe that a reference to one of the myths we studied has been made and able to argue this relationship within the parameters of the assignment, then the connection is valid. The validity or the suitability of the connection is your judgment to make. As an example only (do not use this example however), you may want to consider the brand Nike.
