Medical Physics Applications

Non- Ionising Diagnostic Technique
1. Choose a medical condition that you can use a non-ionising diagnostic technique (ultra-sound, ECG, EEG, MRI etc) to diagnose it.
2. Create a scenario (Somebody comes into the hospital with a suspected brain tumour —-) In this scenario you will describe the condition and the symptoms of the condition, how serious it is, the urgency of it being diagnosed correctly etc.
3. Choose a technique and explain why you are choosing this. Here you will explain what the technique is and how and why it works.
4. Once you have made the diagnosis suggest possible ways of treating the condition.
This should be no more than half a page.
5. Choose a second condition and repeat.
Ionising Diagnostic Technique
1. Choose a medical condition that you can use a ionising diagnostic technique (X-ray, CAT scan, gamma camera, etc) to diagnose it.
Non- Ionising Treatment
1. Choose a medical condition that you can treat using a non-ionising therapy technique (Ultra-sound, pacemaker, Treatment with medicines such as insulin, other medical treatments).
2. Create a scenario (Somebody comes into the hospital with a suspected brain tumour —-) In this scenario you will describe the condition and the symptoms of the condition, how serious it is, the urgency of it being treated correctly etc.
3. Choose a technique and explain why you are choosing this. Here you will explain what the technique is and how and why it works.
a. This should be no more than half a page.
b. This section could be done with the non-ionising diagnostic section.
4. Choose a second condition and repeat.
Ionising Treatment
1. Choose a medical condition that you can treat using an ionising therapy technique (X-Ray, Radio therapy, brachytherapy, there are others).
2. Create a scenario (Somebody comes into the hospital with a suspected brain tumour —-) In this scenario you will describe the condition and the symptoms of the condition, how serious it is, the urgency of it being treated correctly etc.
3. Choose a technique and explain why you are choosing this. Here you will explain what the technique is and how and why it works.
a. This should be no more than half a page.
b. This section could be done with the ionising diagnostic section.
4. Choose a second condition and repeat.

d part
Comparison of Non-Ionising Techniques
The important thing here is comparison.

1. You can add this section to the work you have done in the first part of the assignment if it is appropriate.
2. Choose at least two techniques to compare, one must be ionising and one must be non-ionising.
3. In each case
a) Explain any theory behind the production of the radiation (for instance ultra-sound is dependent on high frequency waves and reflection of waves)
b) Explain in reasonable detail how the radiation is produced
c) Explain for what it will be used
d) Explain how it works on particular medical conditions
e) Explain what precautions need to be taken for the patient and practitioner, when it is used, side effects,
f) Any other benefits or weaknesses.

Repeat this exercise. In the second exercise compare two non-ionising techniques

Below is a table of techniques to choose from.

Ionising radiation Techniques Non- Ionising Radiation Techniques
X-rays Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI
Computerised (axial) Tomography (CT/CAT) scans Lasers
radiopharmaceuticals Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT
radiotherapy ultrasound
stereotactic radiosurgery (gamma knife Infrared thermography (IRT).
proton therapy
